Excellent work, fellow ninjas.
Now, let us look back on the entire mission.

PROLOGUE

The ninjas gathered nearby the Trick House, and were given the following mission...

MISSION

The “Golden Cat”, a legendary artifact with infinite power, had fallen into the hands of Kuminobu Waruda―feudal lord, genius inventor, and master of the Trick House.

Using this power, he aims to enslave the population and overthrow the Edo Shogunate.

At this rate, our beloved Edo will soon fall to flames of war...!
Us ninjas serving the Shogunate must rise up as unseen heroes to protect the peace of our land.

Our mission is to infiltrate Kuminobu’s Trick House, and steal its power source―the “Golden Cat”.

Countless traps are set up to keep intruders out. But, as luck may have it, one thousand mechanical guards are all about to conveniently leave for a 50-minute training session, leaving just one guard behind at the House.
These 50 minutes of weakened defenses are our best chance.

To protect the peace of Edo, go now! Retrieve the Golden Cat, and escape the Trick House in one piece!

The ninjas—together with their senior ninja “Fuma”—infiltrated the Trick House.

Fuma gave them shuriken and disguise cloths, and taught them the Nensha no jutsu (Thought‑Projection Technique), which allows Fuma to share their field of view with others. To test it out, Fuma projected a nearby painting of Mt. Fuji.

Fuma also shared the following information: “If you knock down the targets, the gate will open, and you can proceed further into the room.”

After saying that, the senior ninja left the group to search the floor below.

Knock down targets with shuriken and go through the gate

To open the gate, the ninjas tried to knock down the targets with their shurikens.
However, they quickly ran out and needed to obtain more.
After examining the nearby area, they found eight boxes, each with a shuriken symbol and locked with a 3-digit code. Perhaps they could find more shurikens inside.

There were also wooden panels nearby with strange instructions on the back and numbers that matched the boxes.

Panel 1: Peek

These were pictures of the eyes of a comical Japanese mask (Hyottoko).
After peeking into the eye of the actual mask, they found “105” written there.

Panel 2: Count

The same patterns from the image could be found on the cloth of the multiple kunais stuck in the wall.
They counted the number of each pattern in order, and got the answer “312”.

Panel 3: Look Inside

This was the silhouette of a wooden Japanese doll.
When they took its head off and looked inside, “554” was written there.

Panel 4: Match

They searched for something that matched perfectly with the below frame:

They found a cloth with symbols of a Japanese torii gate and hot springs. When it was matched perfectly with the frame, the number “462” was revealed.

Panel 5: Slide

This silhouette was of the painting of Mt. Fuji that Fuma projected to you using Nensha no jutsu (Thought‑Projection Technique). They slid the painting to the side and found “936” written there.

Panel 6: Follow

After following the string connected to the wooden panel labeled “Follow”, they passed over the numbers “2”, “4”, “8”.

Panel 7: Touch the Back

The slash marks shown here were also on the gate.
When they felt around the back of the gate, they noticed bumpy areas in the shape of the numbers “801”.

Panel 8: Search

The first picture showed a white fox mask, the second a footprint, and the third a shuriken in the wall.
The numbers found in each respective spot were “6”, “5”, and “0”.

The ninjas opened each box, and inside were more shurikens. They used them to knock down the rest of the targets, revealing the below message:
“Look behind the hanging scroll under the stair.”
Was there a way to see the hanging scroll under the stairs?

Fuma, the senior ninja, was investigating the floor below.
By following the instructions on the “Ninja Knowledge” notes, the group leader chanted “NEN! Behind the hanging scroll O UTSU SHITE!”, and had Fuma project the scroll to the group. The answer there was “5963”. The gate opened with that code.

Gather the wooden tiles and activate the mechanism without ringing any bells

After making it past the gate, a bell fell from atop it, triggering an alarm. It seemed that the security system changed to now detect bell sounds. The alarm would no doubt cause the mechanical guard to come running, so the ninjas used their disguise cloths to hide. The guard then appeared to investigate the room.

First, the guard checked if the painting of Kuminobu Waruda was in its proper place. If it wasn’t, the guard would retrieve the painting and place it back correctly.

Next, it would search the room for intruders. Despite the ninjas’ efforts to not make a sound, the mechanical guard sensed something amiss. “Is that a cat?” it asked with suspicion. With quick thinking, the ninja meowed, and avoided discovery.

The mechanical guard left.

After a close call, the ninjas searched the room carefully so as not to ring any bells.
The gold box they saw from outside the gate had a note that said, “Activate the Tile-Matching Mechanism to learn how to open the gold box.”
The Tile-Matching Mechanism was in the same room.

To activate the Tile-Matching Mechanism, the ninjas searched the room, found all of the wooden tiles, and inserted them in their correct places.
There were 16 tiles in total, all hidden somewhere in the room.

Drawer with Padlocks

After finding the keys to open the four padlocks on the drawer, they were able to obtain one wooden tile.

After fitting the painting of Kuminobu perfectly into the slot, they were able to obtain one wooden tile.

When a tile was inserted into a wall pocket, a picture appeared through the tile’s hole.

Based on the tile’s clue, they combined the letters and the name of the animal to form an appropriate word.

The correct pairings are shown below.

Once the tiles were all inserted correctly, instructions to turn the lever appeared.
After turning the lever, the below message appeared on the shoji screen.

Below are the five silent bells:

The letters on the bells from smallest to largest read “HIRAKEGOMA”.
The ninjas all said “HIRAKEGOMA” together, and the panel of the shelf flipped open.

Inside was a note titled “Golden Cat Storage Protocol”.

Activate the four security traps while keeping your balance

According to the note, four mechanisms needed to be activated to enter the hidden room. First, the ninjas all stood on the footprints and clapped three times like it said in Step 3. Doing that caused the security system to change into “Tatami Mat Pressure Detection Mode.”
The ninjas now needed to be careful not to step on the mat.
The Security Traps to disable were now displayed on the shoji screen.

Security Trap 1

In the corridor, there were two fox masks with a space in between. Once the mask shown in the picture (a Noh theater female mask) was placed there upside down, the next Security Trap was displayed.

Security Trap 2

The arrow was all the way at the back of the room, across from the gate.

How could they have gotten there without stepping on the tatami mat?
There were was a red wooden beams on the floor. Since this wasn’t a part of the tatami mat, stepping on it wouldn’t have triggered the alarm. The ninjas gathered their courage and traversed across the beams, and as expected, the alarm did not ring.
While keeping their balance, they hung the mask at the arrow. Then, the next Security Trap was displayed.

Security Trap 3

Starting from the mask, they followed the path to the end, connecting the matching icons along the way.

The words passed over spelled out the message below:

PLACE MANY SHURIKENS WHERE THE END OF THIS PATH IS

The ninjas placed all of the shuriken they had collected into the box at the end of the path. If they hadn’t yet solved all of the shuriken puzzles in the corridor, they solved the remaining ones to obtain more.
When a large number of shuriken was put in the box, the next Security Trap was displayed.

Security Trap 4

The painting must be hung on the altar, but no one could reach it while standing on the wooden beams. Even if they tried to forcibly hang it by stepping on the tatami mat and triggering the alarm, the mechanical guard would’ve put it right back into its former place.

So what they needed to do here, was use the gate’s chain.
The ninjas attached the painting to the center of the chain. They pulled both ends from their positions on the wooden beams at each end of the room to hang it on the altar.

After holding the painting there for five seconds, the password to the hidden room was revealed.

The password was “URAGAERI”.
The group faced the altar together and recited the word, revealing the hidden door.

Place the Tatami Mats Together and Run an Electric Current Through Them.

In the back of the hidden room, there was a box that appeared to be powered by electricity, and squares on the walls with various silhouettes. After examining further, the ninjas realized that the tatami mats could be pulled from the floor as well.
The size of the mats matched perfectly with the wall squares, and there were more pictures on the back of them.
They were definitely related somehow.
One mat had a picture of a shuriken. One wall square had a picture of a dragon.
The ninjas recalled the shurikens they had thrown to knock down the targets and went to look at them. The shurikens indeed had dragons on them.
They checked the other objects represented by the pictures: The bowl had a rabbit, the drawstring pouch had a dog, and the folding fan had a goldfish.
In other words, to solve the puzzle, they needed to figure out which item had which animal or flower from the wall. Then, take the tatami mat with that item and place it against the same wall square.

When the tatami mats were placed in their correct spots, the button on the pedestal began to glow, and the ninjas could now push it.

They pushed the button and an electric current ran through the walls around the room causing a key to drop.

Then, they returned to the first room and used the key to open the gold box.
When they opened it, there was a picture of a lever inside.

When the lever is pointed downwards, the box with the Golden Cat would open. But, the lever was just a picture.

How could they make it point downwards?

To make it point downwards, the picture needed to be flipped upside down.

The ninjas slid the lever picture up, pulling it out in its entirety. By flipping it upside down and reinserting it, they made the lever “point downwards”.

Suddenly, the alarm started blaring, and the ninjas were instructed to stand on the footprints. When they did, a cat’s silhouette emerged from the lever and vanished as if sucked into the wall.

Then, the Golden Cat appeared in its place.

The ninjas tried to take the Golden Cat, but it was restrained again by another lock.

A single touch caused the security system to switch to Golden Cat Contact Detection mode.
The alarm blared, and the mechanical guard came running.

Defeat the mechanical guard and get the key

Like always, the guard scanned the room. But this time, the ninjas were discovered.
The guard flew into a rage, causing a sheet of paper to slip out of its pocket.

According to the note, the key to freeing the Golden Cat hides within the mechanical guard’s body. So, the only way to obtain the key was to destroy the guard.
The guard “will not be damaged unless it falls from a great height.” In other words, by dropping the guard from somewhere high up, they could obtain the key.

As they parted ways with the senior ninja Fuma, he said, “I will now split up with you to investigate the floor below.” So, if they could somehow manage to drop the target from this room, that would be ideal.

The ninjas looked around, but there weren’t any windows, and the staircase wasn’t accessible. Was there anywhere else they could drop it from? If only there was a trapdoor that could be used...

The ninjas needed to remember something they saw before...
The behavior of the Mechanical Guard whenever the security traps were activated!

The Guard would point their finger at the location of the hidden rotating panels. Since they pointed at the hidden room twice, it could mean that there is another rotating panel besides the door to the hidden room itself.
With a spark of hope, the ninjas decided to focus their search on the hidden room.
Upon closer inspection, they noticed a section of the floor in the hidden room where the material was different.

They remembered that they saw a spot with different material before—back when they first entered the previous room.
It was where another rotating panel was located.
Could it mean that this section of the floor in the hidden room was also a hidden rotating panel?
If it was truly a rotating panel, there must be a password to flip it written on the underside of it. To see the password, the ninjas needed to look at the ceiling from the floor below.
There was only one way to see what’s on that ceiling: the Thought-Projection Technique, “Nensha no jutsu”.

The only person who could see it was Fuma, the senior ninja exploring the floor below.

The ninja chanted the words to activate the Ninja Technique and Fuma used his Thought‑Projection Technique to capture an image of the ceiling.

At last, the password was revealed: “DAI KAI TEN.”
...But there was no time to celebrate.

The mechanical guard must be lured in to stand on the trapdoor. Was there a way to achieve this!?

If they recalled the actions of the mechanical guard, they’d remember that it was especially particular about the painting of Kuminobu Waruda.

The guard would always check if the painting was in its proper place.
Meaning, the plan would be to make it stand above the trapdoor, then immediately recite the password to drop the guard below.

So, the operation began. With the painting placed over the trapdoor, the ninjas touched the Golden Cat. The alarm went off and the guard came running. It went straight to the painting to retrieve it.

When the ninjas recited the password, the floor flipped and the guard was dropped down to the floor below, where Fuma laid in wait to deliver the finishing blow.
The key was taken from the shattered guard’s body to free the Golden Cat. The House’s traps all came to a halt, and the once-sealed doors swung open.

All that was left was to escape with the treasure in hand.

And with that, the mission is complete!

With the loss of the Golden Cat, the power source for all of Kuminobu Waruda’s inventions were cut off.

His army of a thousand soldiers all broke down and went haywire. Kuminobu Waruda was caught in the chaos and suffered great injuries.

After news of the commotion spread throughout Edo, his ambitions became known to everyone in the city. Having lost his standing, Kuminobu went into hiding.

The peace of Edo was once again silently protected by the ninjas.
